Kenneth J. Andrien joined SMU in 2012 as the Edmund J. and Louise W. Kahn Chair in History in Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences. Prior to joining SMU, he taught at Ohio State University for nearly 35 years, and was named Humanities Distinguished Professor. Throughout his career, Professor Andrien has been an outstanding teacher of undergraduates and an inspiring mentor to graduate students. He received a B.A. from Trinity College and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Duke University. Professor Andrien specializes in Colonial Latin American history, focusing on the Andean region and the history of the Atlantic World from the 16th to the 19th centuries. He is the author of Crisis and Decline: The Viceroyalty of Peru in the Seventeenth Century (University of New Mexico Press); The Kingdom of Quito, 1690-1830: The State and Regional Development (Cambridge University Press); Andean Worlds: Indigenous History, Culture, and Consciousness Under Spanish Rule, 1532-1825 (University of New Mexico Press); and co-authored, with Allan J. Kuethe, The Spanish Atlantic World in the Eighteenth Century: War and the Bourbon Reforms, 1713-1796 (Cambridge University Press). Professor Andrien also has edited or co-edited four books, including the forthcoming The Spanish Atlantic World, 1492-1825 (Oxford University Press). He retires as Professor Emeritus of History.
